Fall-ing for Stripes

Falling for Stripes

It never ceases to amaze me to see stripes nearly every season.  I am a sucker for stripes.  Every time I walk into a store, I find myself gravitating towards a mound of striped shirts.  I am a moth to a light bulb.  They go with pretty much anything and they really are what I consider, a basic.

Stripes + Emerald

You can dress them up or down, you can layer, and you add prints or great pops of color to really make your outfit.

Stripes with an edge
What is your favorite way to wear stripes? I personally like to go a variety of ways.  It’s so versatile, that you can easily do the 30×30 challenge (in which you only wear 30 items for 30 days) and make dozens of outfits.
Striped Dress with Denim

Do you plan on wearing stripes for fall? How do you plan to spice it up?

Stripes+ Red

You can bet I will be wearing lots of striped sweaters and shirts! I have also seen a recent spike in denim jackets as well so they will be great to pair with your outfits.  I just can’t wait for fall to arrive!  This is definitely an item to add to your back to school lists.

A Little Party Killed Nobody

I was never the type to really go out and party.  I was also the type of person who would stay in on a Saturday night, turn on the tv or curl up on my bed with a good book.  Now that I am growing older I find that I want to go out a little more, I want to grasp and cling onto any opportunity.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from a man I had interviewed with for an internship position (which I accepted and then declined).  They were inviting me to a “Great Gatsby” theme event that would showcase the jewelry of emerging jewelry designers while making their guests rock the roaring 20s look.  I, of course, accepting excitedly.  It was free and I was allowed to bring a guest along.  I brought along my best friend, Susan, as I know she loves dressing in past fashion.  I think it’s her hobby, really.

We had only a week to prepare and tried to find anything we could that would be 20s.  Whoever was best dressed would go home with a prize and it promised a fashion show.  I scrambled to find an outfit that would flatter my body as much of the fashion would fit those with boyish bodies better.

I found 2 amazing dresses from ASOS but I ultimately had to choose one to wear that day while the other would be kept safe in my closet for whenever I may have places to go.  In addition to the dresses, I managed to find a pearl headband, pearl earrings, pearl necklace, black 20s shoes, and a clutch!

Before the party

Before the party

I absolutely love this blue ASOS dress! It has an embellished top that skims over my problem areas, making it very flattering.  Susan wore an adorable, fitted nude pink dress and nearly all her accessories were pink or nude!

The moment we stepped outside, we felt all eyes on us.  I am the type of person who loves to take risks with outfits but I’ve fallen back and just enjoy wearing simple things.  I felt a bit uncomfortable as I do not like being the center of attention.  A man who had been walking up the hill by my house walked past us and looked back.  He must’ve been in his mid to late 30 (40s?). I’m terrible at telling age but he instantly said. “WOAH! I LOVE your headbands, very cute, very cool.”he told us as he nodded appreciatively.  I smiled and thanked him.  He then proceeded to ask as we walked if we “Dressed like that everyday.” I had laughed and told him we were going to a 20s party. He seemed pretty excited about our outfits so I thanked him and we kept walking.

We got on a bus, got off, and went to walk to the other bus stop that would take us to New York.  I live in a very diverse county of New Jersey.  We have all types of nationalities but in this particular town, it’s predominantly Central Americans, which is awesome, since I am also half.  I just could feel ALL their eyes all over me.  They were probably thinking what the hell!?  The moment we got off the first bus we got catcalls and whistles.  Do. not. like.  I’m not a cat nor a dog.  Don’t whistle, if you like what you see just tell me politely.  I am not dressing for you and I don’t appreciate it.

We practically made a run for the other bus stop and got on.  The traffic to NYC was brutal like it always is around rush hour.  The party was at 6 and we got there at 7.  I feel, dressed like this, we got a lot more help then we usually would if we were just dressed normally.  I was standing in the middle of the Meatpacking District.  If you’ve never been there, the streets are all mixed up.  I was staring at my phone blankly until a nice older gentleman helped us get to the street we needed too.  Party here we come!

We arrived fashionably late and I was greeted by the man who had interviewed and invited me.  We were let in and were allowed to roam the small and cozy store.

A beautiful little garden…inside/inbetween the store.

Dress: ASOS; Shoes: TJ Maxx ; Clutch: Rebecca Minkoff from TJ Maxx, Headband: Charming Charlie; Necklace: Charming Charlie

The dress was a steal at $33 from its original $110! So for all the plus-sized ladies, this is your chance!

Beautiful jewelry on display

We left a good 15-20 minutes later.  It was too packed, our feet already hurt, and honestly I had a feeling it was just a shopping event.  We made our way to the subway, stumbling on the cobblestones.  We both stood as no one offered seats, chivalry is dead, and made plans to scarf down some Shake Shack.  A man in maybe his 50s brushed past me from behind and all I heard in my ear was “beautiful”. I began to crack up.  It didn’t really creep me out, I took it as a compliment.  It felt nice to be complimented anyways, thanks random guy in the subway. You made my night.

We limped down 42nd with our treasure trove of food and ran to catch our bus.  It was packed so we sat across from each other.  Two women sat beside us as we began to timidly eat our fries.  Susan had been complaining of a headache so she lifted her headband.  It had literally engraved the design into her skin, I could hardly contain my laughter.  The woman beside me could only utter. “OH. MY. GOD.” and laugh.  Susan was a trooper and kept it on until we reached my house.

The event was a fail but the night was pretty good.  I had my best friend beside me, a cute outfit, and some kick-ass food.  Thank you Shake Shack.  I only wish we could dress like this everyday!

Her Campus National Intercollegiette Conference 2013

Hello Spice Girls & Guys!

It has been a very busy week for me with plenty of events.  Today, I had the opportunity to go to the 2nd Her Campus National Intercollegiette Conference in the heart of New York City.

We had to wake up bright and early as it started at 8:30am and we wanted to make sure we beat the traffic.  I am extremely grateful that my team member and editor-in-chief of Her Campus Montclair was able to give me a lift.  We arrived earlier than expected at 8:00am.

We had some breakfast as they set up.  We were soon able to sign in and get our badges and swag bags.  I was surprised to find that this year they had switched out the lanyard for a pink ribbon, which I was not a big fan of.  The ribbon continuously fell off and was a bit scratchy against my neck.  I find it very adorable hanging by my dry erase board over my desk.

Dimitra and I waited for more of our team members, but unfortunately, one of them passed out and was violently vomiting on the sidewalk.  She had to get rushed to the ER and thankfully she was only dehydrated.  She did have to miss the conference.  The ladies of Her Campus were sweet enough to allow us to take a swag bag to her.  So many thank you to you ladies! It’s very much appreciated! I am sure she will be very happy once I hand it over to her.

We had a blast taking a bunch of photos and we rushed to get some Her Campus merch.  We are having a giveaway with the items we purchased and we could not be more excited! I am still looking for a few more items to throw into the bags.

Soon, it was time to go to the morning keynote which was given by Josie Natori, the Founder and CEO of The Natori Company and Jaqui Lividini, the CEO and Founder of Lividini & Co.  They were both inspirational women and I especially loved the Josie changed her career from business to fashion.  She shows us ladies that not all careers have to be lifelong, you can always pursue other things.

Dimitra and I soon met up with one of our Feature Writers, Tanya, so we could go to panels together. Before the panels started, we went to “pledge” I love having photos with little billboards that say our thoughts or dreams.  You get to learn something about others and about yourself.  Here are our photos and our pledges.

#PledgeTo Land my dream job!

We ended up going to a panel titled Jobs in Marketing and PR: How to Break In.  I’ve had my heart set on marketing, PR, and social media so this was the perfect panel for me.  The panel proved to be popular as it quickly filled up and we were left with a sofa in the back of the room.  The moment I sat in it, I sunk down, leaving me virtually invisible to the panel behind several impeccably dressed ladies.  I didn’t really care as the sofa was the most glorious thing my butt sat on.  I wanted to sleep there honestly but I kept my eyes peeled open and my ears on high alert.  The panel consisted of the following wonderful women: Jacqueline Gonzales- Marketing Strategist Lead at Chipotle Mexican Grill, Stephanie Luu Matthew- Account Supervisor at Intel and Oglivy Public Relations, Keeley Patterson- Director of Marketing and Client Solutions at Glam Media, Julia Quinn- Director of Social Media at Amtrak, Kristen Tully- Account Supervisor at Marina Maher Communications (MMC), and Janna Meyrowitz Turner- Founder/ President of Style House PR.  The person who popped out to me the most was Keeley.  She was bubbly, knowledgeable, and Glam Media is all about blogs!  I was immediately itching to speak to her and ask her some questions.  I gathered up the courage and (courteously) pushed my way through the horde of girls to the front.  She was the sweetest person ever.  Honestly,  I wished I could stuff her in my swag bag and take her home!  She listened to my question and complimented me on my business card and the name of my blog (Score and score!).  I couldn’t help but feel giddy.  I now know I most definitely want to go into the social media realm.  It’s fun and my passion.

Keeley Patterson(far right)

I was ecstatic to see that my old boss at my very first internship was speaking at a panel.  I waited outside the room before and after but I didn’t see her.  I didn’t know if she simply didn’t show up but I was a bit bummed not to say hello to her.  We made our way to the second panel.  This panel was Climbing the Ladder: Journalism Jobs Later On. I’ve always been huge about writing.  It’s always been something I loved to do, hence why I started my blog.  I’ve always wondered about writing for a magazine and I thought this was a great panel.  The key to landing the job? Lots and LOTS of internships.  I cannot stress how much you need internships.  Not one, but several.  It’s a competitive world and hundreds, if not thousands of girls have the same dream as you.  You have to make sure you can edge out the competition.  Another thing you need, a great cover letter.  Don’t just change the name on the cover letter and send it out to several companies, personalize it.  Show them how much you love the company and really try to grasp their attention.  Be professional, but show your personality.

This great panel was comprised of: Elisa Benson- Senior Editor of Social Media at Cosmopolitan, Lauren Brown- Site Director of OKMagazine.com, Emily Chau- Product Editor at Rodale’s, and Jane Nussbaum- Senior Editor at Psychology Today.  The one who stood out to me the most was Lauren Brown.  She was so energetic, it was infectious.  I wanted her to be my best friend.  She was most definitely a teen at heart despite her being the oldest in the panel.  I wanted to speak to her but she was being bombarded so I asked her if we could connect and handed her my business card.  Hopefully, I will be able to connect with her and ask some questions.

Josie Natori was offering bra fittings and a complimentary bra.  We ran up the steps and signed the cards.  I was upset when I saw the bras ranged only from 32-36 A-DD.  I was upset because I am a 38 C.  I feel like she isn’t really catering to the bigger girls.  I put down a bra size in 36D, we will see how it fits.  They also had a BCBGeneration sample sale with adorable little goodies and a BCBGeneration hair bar.  They would do your hair in the cutest styles but the line was too long and I was too tired to get it done.

The best part came.  Free.Chipotle. I know, hold on to your seats because I was flipping tables out of my way to get there (not really, but in my head I was).  This years was even better.  Last year, they simply handed us a burrito of our choice, this year they had two long rows of tables with various toppings and choices, just like at the normal chipotle.  You could get as much or as little as you wanted.  I got some white rice, chicken, mild salsa, corn, cheese, and sour cream with a dash of chipotle tobasco sauce.  In the process, I got my Banana Republic and Her Campus tote bag smeared in guacamole.  I had no idea how.  I cried a little as I ate my delicious lunch when I spotted a medium sized green blot on my WHITE dress.  I can’t have nice things apparently.

We decided to leave around 2:30pm.  I was in pain, I could barely stand anymore while Dimitra was exhausted.  I love the Her Campus Conference but I had spent the whole week running around New York, that it physically drained me.  I just wanted to lie in bed.  We missed the Girl Rising documentary screening, the winner of the Intel laptop, the winner of the printer and other goodies, and a few of the keynotes.  I was a bit bummed I didn’t meet anyone from the Her Campus Blogger Network as I really could not tell who was who.  I did see a friend of mine that I met last year, which was nice.

All in all, it was a great day.  I feel that I learned a lot and I am very excited to do this giveaway for the girls at Montclair.  The swag bag isn’t as good as last year as I don’t know when I will be using the Veet products (they irritate my skin), so I might be giving them away, so keep an eye out!

Contents of my swag bag! People StyleWatch, Josie tote, $400 Chipotle coupon, UnReal candy, Veet products, Intel Nail Polish, perfume, etc.

Contents of my swag bag! People StyleWatch, Josie tote, $400 Chipotle coupon, UnReal candy, Veet products, Intel Nail Polish, perfume, Jansport Scarf, etc.

I also got this tasty “reduce stress” lightly carbonated drink.  I love lychee so I ran for it.  It has a slight diet aftertaste but it’s rather good.

And they are making some new Audrey Hepburn memes and we were given a sneak peek.  I am a huge Audrey fan so I grabbed all four.

I also bought myself a Her Campus sweater which is extremely soft and a bit oversized and a Her Campus V Neck…yay!

I was wearing a Prabal Gurung for Target dress, Prabal Gurung for Target wedges, necklace from Charming Charlie, and bracelets by BaubleBar, Aldo Accessories, and Icing.

I do hope to go again next year and network a bit more!  Thank you so much for a great day, Her Campus.  I am pooped!

Too Faced x Sephora VIB Event

Sephora event

Disclaimer: I am in no way sponsoring Sephora, Too Faced, Godiva, or Baublebar. I am simply recounting the event for your enjoyment.

Hello Spice Girls & Guys! It’s been a busy and hectic week for me as I’ve been interning, running around the city in 97+ degree weather and planning outfits for events left and right.  I received an email from Sephora as all VIBs (Very Important Beauty Insiders) do and it was for an event happening on July 18th.  I rushed to the phone and reserved my spot for my cousin and I.

The weather yesterday was brutal with real feel temperatures of 100+. So needless to say, I am looking less than cute with sweat pouring down my face and my chunky arms out for the world to see.  It’s ok though, I survived.

My day started off crazy as I rushed to get ready and ran out of my house with no makeup on as they promised FULL makeovers.  I was stuck in traffic for an hour and a half thanks to rush hour.  The event started at 7pm and we got there at 7:20pm with the event in full swing.

We were greeted at the door with a $10 off coupon for Baublebar and a raffle ticket.  My cousin and I made a beeline for the drinks.  They were making Godiva chocolate cocktails.  I took a sip and it was way too strong for my taste.  We grabbed some chocolate truffles and looked at all the jewelry.  It’s nothing I haven’t seen before as  I frequent Baublebar’s site regularly. We got on line for the makeover.  It was a disappointment.  The male makeup artist would just keep talking about how the mascara was shaped according to Marilyn Monroe’s body porportions, an hourglass, to me it just looked like a regular brush.  It worked well but I have a whole bunch of mascara to get through now.  All he did was swipe it on and send us on our way.  He had an eyeshadow palette on the table and did not even bother to add eyeshadow for either of us.  After me, he simply walked away from the table.

The space was packed with girls, it was hot so we tried to do everything fast. We did not win the raffle, surprise.  We went to the photobooth and it was a fail.  It would just snap a picture when we weren’t ready so all 3 are less than flattering.  I love Baublebar but a lot of the pieces were pretty pricey. I like to splurge once in a while but yesterday was not the day.  I did get a necklace though that  I had been eyeing.  It was $34 and with the $10 off it was around $26 with tax. Not bad!  The best part of the whole event? Leaving and getting our goodie bags.

I had been so excited about the event, I think I hyped it up too much.  It was a great experience and who doesn’t love free stuff? It wasn’t exactly free soo..who doesn’t love stuff?  I was expecting more.  There were too many people, it was too hot, and the makeovers weren’t makeovers. If i wanted to swipe on mascara, I could’ve done it at home.  But I enjoyed just looking around.  All in all, it was just ok. Nothing  crazy, but it wasn’t dead boring either. It ended at 9 and I believe we left at 8.

Here are pictures from the event!

2nd Her Campus National Intercollegiette Conference

Her Campus

Hello Spice Girls & Guys!  I’m excited to announce that I am once again going to the Her Campus National Intercollegiette Conference.

I will be going only on July 27th but it takes place both July 27th (For Her Campus Bloggers & Members) & Jul7 28th (for EVERYONE! Even readers like you!) It is a very exciting time where you get to both network and meet new people but there are also going to be some great workshops.  In addition to the great workshops, which offer great tips (I would take a pen and notepad, if I were you), they have a great panel of guests and speakers from Lucky, Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Redbook, & more!

What’s even better? Chipotle will be there again to give us some lunch and there will even be a manicure bar and braiding station! These two things were not offered last year and I know it will be exciting.   There will even be a movie screening and a BCBG sample sale! The event will be chock full of great, inspirational women.  I think it’s something everyone should experience and go to at least once.  They even held a raffle last year, which I won a book from.  There are a lot of fun, interesting workshops and you can even form new friendships and find new people to connect with professionally.

Did I forget to mention there is a swag bag? The moment you walk in, they hand you a little tote full of goodies.  Nothing makes me happier than free swag. It’s exciting! So if you have nothing to do on July 28th, bring in a little excitement into your life and buy your ticket to the Her Campus Conference.  You won’t regret it. It’s worth every. single. penny.

If you are interested in going, click here. It is $30.00 plus the fee but honestly $30 is a steal.  I’ve been looking forward to this event all summer. ALL summer. What are you waiting for!? Get your ticket now!

I hope you are all enjoying yourselves and I hope to see you there on July 27 or July 28!

Current Obsession: Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran

Hello, Spice Girls & Guys!

I’ve decided to write a blog post inspired by my favorite musician of all time: Ed Sheeran.  I know I’ve written about him but I just wanted to just dedicate post all about him.

I found out about Ed on Tumblr.  I clicked the video and was squealing to see Rupert Grint on screen but even more shocked to see him singing.  At the end of the song, Lego House, we soon found the singer to be Ed Sheeran and Rupert was an obsessed (deranged) fan.  I hadn’t really liked the song as it was too slow but I decided to give a listen to the song You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.  I was hooked.

Picture taken at Bowery Ballroom by myself.

Picture taken at Bowery Ballroom by myself.

He has a rough but shudder inducing voice.  I just love that he is pure, raw talent.  He sounds virtually the same in his concerts as he does on his album, no auto-tune there!  It’s just a man, a stage, and a guitar.  He uses a loop pedal to loop a track on stage and it’s mind blowing.  He literally took my breath away at the first concert I went to.  The second concert I was practically hyperventilating on the floor.

As much as I love him, his fans do kind of freak me out, as any other huge “#1” fan is.  If they had a plastic spoon in their hands, you’d probably be bleeding out on the ground.  I remember standing outside in line for hours waiting to be let into Terminal 5 and girls were actually getting violent, threatening each other, and just plain ol’ being nasty.

Other than that, I tried to enjoy the concert without being crushed but that hadn’t been the case.  They literally crushed their bodies against mine, trying to get in front when I was already in the middle. I had to give in as my friend was going to pass out from the pressure of everyone’s bodies on her.

Back to Ed! I love how he’s worked so hard to get to where he is now.  He was virtually unknown but now he’s huge.  HUGE.  It’s even a surprise to me.  He has played over 1,000+ gigs and he once didn’t have a home, most often heard saying in his songs that he lives on sofas or couches.  It’s been 2 years since I’ve discovered this beautiful gem and I am still obsessing.  He is a true artist, he sings about love, heartache, heartbreak, and losses.  He doesn’t sing about getting bitches or money.  He is a true, down-to-earth person.  Plus, who can resist that beautiful British accent that comes through even when he is singing!?  Did I mention he raps? Oh yes..beautiful melodies..and then he can rap at lightning speed.  My heart imploded when I first heard him.  This fiery ginger knows just how to make the ladies scream..as well as the guys. He is a true performer.  While I am not crazy about him going on tour with Taylor Swift (I just can’t stand her), he has gained a lot of fans because of it.  You go, Ed!

If you haven’t given Ed a listen, I will link some videos down below for you to check out.

If it was up to me, I’d put his whole album here! Enjoy! Let me know what you think of him below in the comments, I would love to hear!

Summer Reading

Hello Spice Girls & Guys!

Summer can be full of fun things to do such as the beach, internships, events, etc.  I find that sometimes I get so exhausted, that I just want to sit in bed and read a good book.  Now that I’ve decided to take a break from working (at least in person), I have much more time on my hands this summer.

I’ve comprised a list of books that I want to read or re-read this summer.

1. Harry Potter Series

My first few books are yellowing and are growing more and more fragile as the days pass.  I am a hardcore Potterhead (ask my friends) and I just love sitting down and reading these books.  It hits a chord in me.  It reminds me of simpler times and times when I wholeheartedly believed in magic.  It feels good to open the books again and refresh your memory, even though I pretty much know all there is to know about Harry Potter.  I think I am going to begin with the fifth book as it is the longest and I know I probably forgot a lot about it.  I’m growing excited just thinking about it!

2. The PR Couture Guide to Breaking into Fashion PR: How to begin a successful career in fashion public relations

Who said that summer can’t be edumicational? I like researching about careers.  I’ve always been interested in writing but I want to expand my knowledge and experiences.  I have fallen in love with marketing and social media and I figured PR would be a great thing to also learn about.  This little book is a guide, I’ve read a few pages and I already know some PR companies I want to apply to for an internship in the future.  It never hurts to learn a little more about what is around you.

3. Paris Street Style: A Guide to Effortless Chic

Again, another guide.  I just like getting educated, whether its in a language, career, or even fashion.   I bought this book toward the end of the school year and have yet to get into it.  I have a love for Europe especially the United Kingdom and France.  I thought this book would be a great aesthetic piece in my room and a great way to see how they dress in Paris or France.  It’s just amazing how different, unique, or similar our fashion can be to theirs.

What is in your summer reading list? Do you have any good suggestions? I am open to any kind of book especially fantasy or something of entertainment. I would love to hear from you all!

Happy reading, readers! 🙂

Vivacious Pink Nails

Vivacious Pink Nails

Hello Spice Girls & Guys,

I decided over the weekend to finally add some color to my nails.  I had spent a few weeks going commando on my nails as they were growing brittle and the layers were peeling off.  I was pleased to see they were super long and super strong after allowing them to breathe.

When I had walked out of my internship on my last day there, I had stopped by the Sephora on 5th Ave to see if I could find a product my cousin had been searching for.  The moment I walked in, there was a huge display of nail polish that was covered in signs that screamed Nail Polish! 50% off! How could I resist? I ended up buying four.  Of the four, a hot pink was one of them.  It’s called Diva- In- Training and upon further research, I found it was part of the Glee collection. How nice.

It’s been a very long time since I used hot pink nail polish or hot pink anything for a matter of fact.  I decided to try it out.  I loved it.  It complimented my skin tone and was the perfect pop of color needed for summer.  I decided to take it up a notch and add a white design.  I am no picasso, I used the Konad stamping system, which I could also offer instructions or a tutorial on if you please.

I think it came out pretty well, what do you think?

The sale is still going on! There are plenty of nail polishes on Sephora.com as well as different ones in your stores so happy hunting!
