How to Choose a Major

How to Choose a Major

Young adults everywhere are packing up their things to start heading off to college.  Many might have their whole career mapped out in front of them, while others don’t know what they are going to study or do.  Don’t fret! Everyone has been there one point or another.  I was one of the hopefuls who was sure about going into Physical Therapy and I was a Biology major.  As September grew closer, I grew unsure and then I realized I didn’t love it.

In August of 2011, before my freshman year of college, I switched my major from Biology to English, as I love writing.  2 semesters in, I got a really bad English teacher who gave all my papers Ds, despite me knowing that I was great at it.  I switched my major once again to Fashion.  3 years later, I am still sticking with it! Here are the things you need to think about:

1. Do you love it?

If the core classes and descriptions do not stir excitement in you, then chances are, you aren’t really in love with the major as a whole.  When I glanced upon all those classes of Chemistry and Mathematics, I nearly died inside.  Now, when I look at the class descriptions of Fashion Marketing or Historical Costume, I get excited.  It shows that I really love what I am studying and in turn, all that positivity and happiness will show in my work and in interviews.

2. Do you see yourself in the field?

If you are hoping to be a nurse or go into the medical field and you cringe and faint every time you see blood, chances are, you aren’t going to be a very good nurse.  I realized that I couldn’t see myself in the medical field.  While I loved helping people, I am very sensitive, the 3 months I volunteered at a nursing home, nearly ended me.  I would go home sobbing and crying at all the old people who I was afraid I wouldn’t see the next day.  You need to sit down and really think if you could see yourself doing the work and living it everyday. Be realistic with yourself.

3. Are you good at it?

Math is the core of accounting.  If you are bad at math, why struggle through your career? You CAN get better, but if you aren’t good at something, it also means because you don’t enjoy it.  People like to succeed in jobs that they are good at.  You are at your happiest.  If you are good at art there are a variety of careers to go into.  If you are good at languages, there are a variety of jobs that range from translator to working internationally.  The world is at your fingertips.

4. Take classes

If I didn’t venture out and take a course in fashion, I would’ve never realized my love for it.  You don’t have to have a major the moment you step foot on campus.  Take 1-2 extra courses you feel that interest you. (You are allowed electives at many colleges).  I took a Mythology class and fell in love, but I couldn’t myself doing history or anything of the sort.  Classes are a great way to find a new interest or love.

5. Research

If you aren’t sure what the major or career entails it always pays off to do your research before you jump the gun.  Make sure you are in it for the long run.  You can always switch your majors in the first 2 years of college but any later than that can delay graduation.  If you know anyone in that major, ask.  I had asked my friend from high school, who also studied at the same university, all about the fashion major.  I had never been big into fashion but the thought of going into something I knew nothing about, excited me.

6. Money

Sadly, the reality is, no major is made the same.  Some gain much more money than others.  If money is a big deal for you then try to find a major that gives you that.  I am a much artistic person, I can’t see myself wearing a suit and heading off to work. I went into this major knowing that while it might not pay the most or has the most competition, that I am going to make the best of it.

7. You can have more than one!

If you have more than one interest you can always double major (but it is difficult workload), or you can choose a minor.  You only take a few more courses and you gain the experience and knowledge

8. Follow your heart

If you have your heart set on something, don’t let anyone change your mind.  Your happiness comes before everyone else.  You may have your parents’ best interest in mind, but you are the one who is going to have to work and live the life.

I thought of all of these things before I settled on my major, minor, and certification. I hope this helped you incoming freshman–or others settle on theirs!

  • First-Aid: You never know when you might have an accident or someone else might have a cut.  It’s good to be prepared and have some bandages and antibiotic.

  • Pad or Tampon Holder (for the ladies): Nothing is more embarrassing then having to hide your tampon or pad in your pocket, shoe, or physically lug your bag to the bathroom.  There are some cute holders to do away with that problem.

Back to School, Back to Planning

*Quick Note: I have not been sponsored or paid for this post.  I am simply reviewing and introducing a product I really enjoyed.
With September fast approaching, I saw it fit that I got a new planner.  Being part of the Her Campus Blogger Network exposed me to some great products.  I was introduced to Erin Condren.  I was immediately smitten.  All her products are colorful and can be personalized to any extent, depending on how much you are willing to shell out.

I purchased the Erin Condren Life Planner.  The moment I got it I knew that I was going to have a blast using it.  I am kind of excited for school to start already!  I figured I can take all you Spices with me on the ride!

Look at the adorable boxes!

I had arrived from a particularly rigorous workout and dragged myself up the stairs to see these two lovely, beautiful boxes on my table.  I was only expecting one but I figured one box held the planner and the other the accessories I had ordered.

They put such thought into their product and I love the perfectly wrapped paper and sticker.

image(73)

The really did a great job wrapping it. Even though it’s just a planner, they used the best wrapping materials to make sure that it arrived in tact.

image(74)When I opened the two boxes, I found that they had sent me two orders and charged me only once.  I contacted the Erin Condren Team to alert them of their error.  They responded quickly and told me that they would not make me send it back and to think of it as a buy one, take one deal and to enjoy them.  I thought that was really sweet of them but what was I going to do with two planners?  I put a cute strip of washi tape over my name and gave it to my cousin who is heading off to Buffalo to study to be a doctor.  I know she will get good use of it!

image(70)

photo(36)I really loved how she not only sent a welcome letter with a $10 off code, but I also received this $10 off card as well.

image(75)I ordered a pen holder so if I ever lose all my pens, somehow, I know I have one attached to my planner.  This was just my shopaholic self talking myself into something.

And the main attraction…my planner!

image(76)My planner is the Candy Lace design with a custom colorway.  The lace is Light Grey while the dots are Pool.  You can customize the first and second line.  The first line is my name and I added one of my favorite quotes on the front.  “A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor” It is laminated so it keeps it protected from spills and bending under the weight of all those textbooks in your bag.  It’s made to be durable.

photo(37)Every month has a different color page and tab which makes it easier to find.  The planner also has a little pouch of sturdy plastic to hold some of your items.  It comes with stickers that say birthday, mani/pedi, etc as well as a variety of blank stickers so that you can stick it in one of these little cubes and write on it.  I decided to take the initiative from other people and use Washi tape to personalize my planner. I will do a separate post on all the accessories I got for the planner soon.

The price is a little steep for $50 which goes up steadily if you get some of the accessories.  I got the pens, the elastic bands (Not sent yet), and the pen holder.  I think it is a great investment as planners help you succeed.  It’s something all girls and guys need to keep organized.

You can get your own planner here.

What I learned in My First 2 Years of College

MSU

I’ve decided to do a different kind of post today.  As I was walking/ wobbling down Madison Avenue today in my drenched flats, I was thinking about everything I learned in my first 2 years of university.  It’s been a whirlwind and I honestly can’t believe that when September arrives, I will be a junior at Montclair State University.  I am slowly finding myself but I know I am nowhere near knowing who I am and it’s ok, I will be sure of who I am in the next few years.

I switched my major and minor a few times.  I had enrolled as a Biology major to please my parents and I had thought I wanted to be a Physical Therapist. I stink at Mathematics and Chemistry, I did love Biology, but all those math classes and labs were going to be the death of me.  I switched right before school began to an English Major.  I’ve always been an avid reader and writer, but after getting terrible grades on my papers, thanks to a certain professor, my confidence was thrown out a window.  I finally decided to take a plunge and take an artistic route.  I’ve never been artistic but I was a shopaholic and could appreciate clothing.  I became a Fashion Studies Major.  I then added on a Communications Minor and a year later, I added on a Makeup Artistry Certification.

It’s okay to not know what you want to do right away.  Go into college undecided and take a few courses.  You will soon realize what you love or hate and it will be much easier to decide what you want to make you major.  Another great way, is to talk to your friends or advisor.
You should try to make friends.  It has been difficult for me to make friends as a commuter.  I go to school and then head home.  I do not have my own car yet as I do not have the funds, so I am often picked up by my father.  I wish I could be able to take a bus but since my school is in the middle of nowhere, it would take 3 buses and 5 hours. That’s like me going to another state!  I have made only a few good friends and sadly, one of them has graduated on.  I do plan on keeping in contact but I feel like I am all work and no play.  Try to balance your work, school, and social life.  It may be difficult but it will make everything much more enjoyable.

A great way to make friends is joining a club or organization.  If you don’t want to join a club or organization, then you could try talking to some people in your courses. I can say I don’t have many friends, but all you need is 1 or 2 really good ones!

Multi-tasking.  It’s a life saver.  If I didn’t multi-task, I would get nothing done.  Some might argue that multi-tasking stops you from focusing but I find that it gets everything done.  It’s also great to know how to efficiently prioritize your tasks.  Write them out and do them in the order you think will be best.  This is a great thing to know for future internships or careers.

Responsibility.  I can honestly say that I’ve become much more independent in my life.  As an only child, I’ve always had overprotective parents.  They’ve loosened their reigns a little bit and as a result I have been able to make my own choices.  I’m on internship #3, have a part-time job at Gap, and am a Social Media Director/Writer at Her Campus Montclair.  I’ve been able to work hard and I know they are proud.  I can honestly say I am proud of myself too!

College is what you make of it.  It isn’t all about the classes but it’s about a fair balance of studying, working, socializing, and relaxing.  I will be really sad when I graduate but I do not plan to let my studies stop there. I’ve decided a few months ago that I will get my GPA high enough to get into graduate school for Marketing, PR, or Communications.

If any of you have questions about university or any more questions about my experiences, feel free to comment below.  I would love to offer you my opinion and advice!

Toodles!
